JONNY CLAYTON took victory in the final Players Championship event of 2017 to clinch his first PDC title with a 6-1 defeat of James Wilson in Wednesday’s final.

The Welsh ace, competing in his first PDC ProTour final, fired in three ton-plus finishes including a match-winning 121 checkout on the bull, to claim the £10,000 first prize.

Clayton stormed through the field of 128 players to win Players Championship 22, defeating PDC title winners Terry Jenkins, Darren Webster and Rob Cross along the way.

“It’s fantastic,” said Clayton. “I had nerves but I don’t think I was as nervous in the final as I was in the semis because it was just one more step and you’ve got to try and relax in the final and let them go. Hopefully it’s the first of many.”
