SIMON WHITLOCK produced an incredible performance to book his place in the last 16 of the bwin Grand Slam of Darts, where he defeated Gerwyn Price in an epic contest on Monday.

The recent European Championship runner-up was staring elimination in the face when he trailed the Welshman 4-1 in Wolverhampton, but turned the match around in style by winning four straight legs to triumph.

They included two maximum 170 checkouts and ‘The Wizard’ ended the match with an incredible average of 108.86 – the second highest he has produced in televised event.

“I’m really relieved but also really happy,” said Whitlock, who had defeated Andrew Gilding on Sunday after losing his opener against Glen Durrant.

“I was almost going home but I’m so glad that I managed to find that level when I really needed it. It was an incredible match to be involved in, let alone win.

“I’m really excited for the rest of the tournament now. If I play like this then there is no reason I can’t go on to win it.”
