MICHAEL VAN GERWEN brushed off suggestions that he is no longer the best player in the world after sweeping past Ireland’s Steve Lennon in round one of the Unibet World Grand Prix in Dublin.

The world number one bounced back from high-profile defeats at the World Matchplay and Champions League with a dominant display on opening night at the CityWest Hotel.

Van Gerwen, who has won the unique double-start tournament three times, ruthlessly completed a two-sets-to-nil success over debutant Lennon on Sunday evening.

“At least I won my first round game this year!” said Van Gerwen, who had been beaten by John Henderson in round one 12 months ago.

“It was a strange game because my scoring wasn’t great but my doubling was pretty good which is a good sign.

“I’m always doing my best but I’m only human. The performances are there and I’m sure the wins will come.”

When asked about the debate on whether 2018 UK Open, World Matchplay and Champions League winner Gary Anderson is currently the best player in the world rather than him, he responded: “I beat him this weekend with 107 average. They say you’re only as good as your last game.

“He didn’t knock me out of the tournaments that he won but he is a phenomenal player. It is for other people to judge. We are the best two players in the world, I’m happy to say it that way.”

Title sponsors Unibet have priced up Van Gerwen as a strong favourite to take the title, with the Dutchman available at 11/10, while Scotland’s Anderson is priced at 9/2.

Van Gerwen will meet Darren Webster in the second round on Tuesday night.
