Simon Whitlock clinched his first PDC title of 2014 by winning Players Championship 12 in Coventry on Sunday.

Whitlock defeated James Wade 6-3 in the final, which included a 154 checkout from ‘The Wizard’, as he picked up the £10,000 winner’s check.

The Australian kicked off his run to glory with early victories over Matt Clark and Matt Padgett before defeating Kevin Painter 6-2.

The world number four then saw off Jamie Bain to reach the quarter-finals, where he pipped Ian White 6-5.

In the last four, Whitlock won another last-leg decider to overcome the challenge of an in-form Brendan Dolan, before claiming his 11th Pro Tour triumph with his victory against Wade.

Wade reached the final by defeating world number one Michael van Gerwen in the semis, with ‘The Machine’ missing double 12 for a nine-darter in the process.
