MICHAEL VAN GERWEN claimed a third European Tour title of 2018 after a string of exceptional displays in Sindelfingen, where he was crowned European Darts Grand Prix champion on Sunday.

Fellow Dutchman Danny Noppert impressed with a run to his first European Tour semi-final, after edging out Joe Cullen who is the only player to reach the quarter-final stages of all five events in 2018.

Jamie Lewis and Simon Whitlock also reached the quarter-finals in Sindelfingen.

Van Gerwen averaged over 110 in his quarter-final win against Dave Chisnall, a semi-final whitewash against Michael Smith – which took just over ten minutes to complete seven legs – and his final triumph against James Wade.

The Dutchman had earlier seen off Alan Tabern and Darren Webster in a tournament that saw his match average improve with every round.

“I think that was my best ever tournament,” said the world number one, who picked up his 23rd career European Tour win and his tenth PDC title of 2018 with the success.

“To average over 110 for three games in a row is special.

“Other players always push me, and I have to do something special to win these games.”
