Defending Premier League champion Michael van Gerwen made it two wins from two in this year’s tournament with a 7-5 success against Robert Thornton on Thursday evening.

van Gerwen hit five 180s in a hard fought victory against Scotland’s Thornton, who, like ‘Mighty Mike’, is competing in the Premier League for the second consecutive season.

Former finalist Simon Whitlock was beaten by Gary Anderson in Bournemouth and will search for his first win of the campaign when he takes on Raymond van Barneveld next Thursday.

van Gerwen goes up against Dave Chisnall in Belfast, while Thornton faces Anderson.
