Michael van Gerwen ended Peter Wright’s unbeaten start in the Premier League with a 7-5 victory in Dublin to move two  points clear at the top of the table.

van Gerwen took out a brilliant 128 finish in the final leg to take maximum points off Wright, who was runner-up to ‘Mighty Mike’ when he became World Champion in January.

There was disappointment for Simon Whitlock, however. ‘The Wizard’ was eliminated from the tournament despite earning a draw against Wes Newton.

Raymond van Barneveld shared a draw with Phil Taylor, while Adrian Lewis versus Dave Chisnall also ended in deadlock.

Gary Anderson defeated Newton in the evening’s other match as Robert Thornton enjoyed an evening off due to having played twice in a previous week.

Week nine will see another player confirmed in the relegation zone alongside Whitlock, when the players face ‘Judgement Night’ in Cardiff.
