Vincent van der Voort produced a string of fine performances to take victory at the Austrian Darts Open in Salzburg, defeating Jamie Caven with a brilliant comeback in Sunday’s final.

van der Voort, whose glory charge began in Thursday’s qualifying event, fought back from being 5-2 behind in the decider to win 6-5 and claim the £20,000 winner’s cheque and his first PDC ranking title since 2011.

The Dutch ace had seen off compatriot Christian Kist and higher ranked opponents in Justin Pipe and Brendan Dolan to reach the quarter-finals.

There, he defeated three-time World Champion John Part on Sunday afternoon before a 6-3 success over Austrian number one Mensur Suljovic sealed his place in the final.

After Caven moved within a leg of victory with a 5-2 lead, van der Voort refused to be denied his second biggest career payday and reeled off four straight legs, with fabulous finishes of 136 and a match-winning 83.

“I’m so happy at the moment,” said van der Voort, who celebrated victory with a dance across the stage at the Salzburg Arena.

“My celebration at the end shows how much it means to me and I don’t have words to describe this – it’s unbelievable.”
