MICHAEL VAN GERWEN returned to the oche in style by winning the Dutch Darts Masters for a fourth consecutive year.

The world number one successfully defended his home European Tour event with a 6-1 final victory over Steve Beaton in Maastricht.

Van Gerwen had not played in a PDC tournament since his World Matchplay quarter-final defeat to Phil Taylor in July, opting to take a month off to spend with his family around the birth of his daughter.

The Dutchman beat compatriot Jeffrey De Zwaan 6-1 on Saturday before defeating Kyle Anderson by the same margin on Sunday afternoon, when he averaged 107.6.

In the quarter-finals, van Gerwen produced a stunning 12-darter to break in the deciding leg of his thrilling contest with Northern Ireland’s Daryl Gurney.

He then defeated Michael Smith 6-2 before seeing of Beaton in the decider to pick up the trophy and £25,000 winner’s cheque.

MODUS star John Henderson also enjoyed a good tournament, reaching the quarter-finals before losing out to Beaton.
