MICHAEL VAN GERWEN finished top of the Unibet Premier League for a seventh consecutive season, maintaining his perfect record of first place finishes in the league phase of the tournament.
The world number one defeated Mensur Suljovic 8-5 on the last of 16 weeks of action in Leeds on Thursday night, and clinched top spot after Rob Cross was defeated by James Wade.
Van Gerwen will take on Daryl Gurney in Thursday’s play-offs at London’s O2, where he will bid to win the title for a fifth time.
“It’s a great achievement for myself but I know I can do better than this,” said Van Gerwen. “There’s lots of room for improvement because I let myself down in a few games.
“But now I will focus on next week and the most important thing is to win the Play-Offs in London.”
Van Gerwen has never failed to reach the final and if he continues that feat he will meet the winner of other semi-final between Cross and Wade.
