JONNY CLAYTON makes his BetVictor World Matchplay debut on the opening night of this year’s tournament in Blackpool, where he is confident of making his mark.
The Welsh star has risen to prominence in the last couple of years, picking up two PDC titles along the way.
His biggest success to date came on the European Tour when he was crowned Austrian Darts Open champion, which secured his place in several televised tournaments.
Having reached the final of the 2017 Players Championship Finals, Clayton is determined to impress on the big stage in 2018.
“I’m really looking forward to the Matchplay,” said Clayton, who will take on Michael Smith on Sayurday 21 July.
“Being a dart player, these are the tournaments you want to play in and slowly but surely I’m making my way into more and more of the big TV events.
“Everyone always says Blackpool has an amazing atmosphere and now I’ve got the chance to experience it for myself which really excites me.
“I’ve got total respect for Michael as a person and a dart player,” said Clayton.
“It will be a real challenge to beat him but it’s one I’m looking forward to massively.
“My preparation has gone very well, I’ve had my head down on the practice board for the last few weeks so hopefully my hard work will pay off.”
‘Matchplay Men’ is a series of preview articles by Chris Murphy, featuring the eight MODUS-represented players who are featuring in the 2018 BetVictor World Matchplay.
