MICHAEL VAN GERWEN’S 170 checkout was a fitting end to the 2018 PDC European Tour season following a dominant campaign for the world number one and a special season for MODUS.
Van Gerwen won a record-breaking eight titles, while Jonny Clayton’s maiden European Tour triumph in Austria meant that MODUS stars collected nine out of thirteen titles on the continent this year.
It could have been even more as Simon Whitlock twice came close, leaving with runner-up trophies in both Copenhagen and Riesa.
It was also a good campaign for Steve West who reached three semi-finals, and Joe Cullen who reached two plus a further six quarter-finals – although both will have been frustrated not have taken the next step.
Following the thirteen events, the field for the European Championship was confirmed – with MODUS representing seven members of the 32-player field.
In addition to number one seed Van Gerwen, Clayton (10), Whitlock (8), Cullen (5) and West (16) – Danny Noppert and Richard North both earned debuts in the tournament – North after embarking on a brilliant run to the semi-finals of the last event.
The 2018 Unibet European Championship will take place in Dortmund from October 25-28 and will be shown live in the UK on ITV4.
