MICHAEL VAN GERWEN produced the highest average of the 2019 Unibet Premier League season as he defeated Michael Smith convincingly in Liverpool.
Reigning champion van Gerwen completed an 8-3 win over last year’s beaten finalist with a three-dart average of 109.11 on night 11.
The victory kept up the pressure on league leader Rob Cross, who van Gerwen meets next week -knowing victory would see return to the summit of the table.
“My doubles were phenomenal and I put Michael under pressure from the beginning,” said van Gerwen, the world number one.
“I’ve been steady this year and not made a lot of mistakes. I performed well today and I want to keep it going – but there is more to come.
“Rob is playing really good darts at the moment so I know I’m going to have to play at my best to beat him next week, and this win is good for my confidence.”
