MICHAEL VAN GERWEN claimed a record-equalling fourth European Championship title as he continued his dominance of the tournament in Hasselt, Belgium last weekend.

Van Gerwen defeated Rob Cross 11-7 in Sunday’s final to claim the £100,000 first prize and lift the trophy for the fourth consecutive year. The world number one averaged almost 109 in a brilliant decider, after surviving two missed match darts by Kyle Anderson – who also hit a nine-darter – in their semi-final thriller.

“I think it was a great final,” said Van Gerwen, who had earlier seen off Simon Whitlock in the last eight.

“Rob kept putting me under pressure and I had to play well. I didn’t realise my average in the final was so high but I’m really happy with that.

“I didn’t play my best game in the semi-final but I’m really glad I won this title – it feels good for me and it means a lot to me. I always want to perform and I want to keep playing well.”
