SIMON WHITLOCK was denied a second European Championship title after losing in Sunday’s final in Dortmund, where Joe Cullen had reached is first televised semi-final.

Whitlock saw Steve Beaton and world number two Peter Wright to book his place in the final day of action.

He then defeated Steve West, who was appearing in his second TV quarter-final of the year, before edging out Cullen in a last-leg decider to reach the final – thanks to a 110 checkout.

The Australian, who claimed European glory in 2012, lost out to James Wade in the final.

Both he and Cullen left the event with mixed emotions, following their best runs on TV in 2018.

Had a bit of time to reflect on the disappointment from the final. Not just at the result but also how I played in it. Had some great moments though and feeling good about the rest of the year. Home now and if I’d been offered a S/F at the start of the weekend I’d have took it. But for it to end in the manner it did leaves a bitter taste! Still….I’m heading in the right direction!
