2010 Grand Slam runner-up James Wade was denied the chance to reach the last four despite putting up a fantastic fight against world number one Phil Taylor on Saturday.
Left-hander Wade pushed the 16-times World Champion hard after falling 9-2 behind but a few narrowly missed doubles stopped him from completely turning around the early deficit, eventually losing 16-12.
Taylor will play Adrian Lewis in the semi-finals after ‘Jackpot’ saw off Kim Huybrechts.
Thornton’s opponent Waites had beaten Ted Hankey on Friday.
