Michael van Gerwen produced a sensational comeback to defeat Adrian Lewis in the last 16 of the Players Championship in Minehead, while Raymond van Barneveld set up a quarter-final clash against Phil Taylor after a dramatic last-leg win over Robert Thornton on Saturday.

Number one seed van Gerwen overturned a 6-3 deficit against two-time World Champion Lewis by taking the last six legs on the spin to progress to the last eight, where he will face Wez Newton on Sunday afternoon.

The Dutchman averaged 107 in the triumph, which included finishes of 112, 124 and 130 from world number two ‘Mighty Mike’.

van Gerwen’s compatriot van Barneveld edged past Thornton in a thrilling encounter, which saw both players miss doubles for the match before ‘Barney’ eventually won 9-8.

The five-time World Champion will face world number one Taylor on Sunday, when the tournament will reach its conclusion over two sessions.
