JOE CULLEN’s brilliant run to the quarter-finals of last week’s BetVictor World Matchplay may have ended with heartache for the Yorkshireman but may prove to be a pivotal tournament in his career.

Cullen missed two darts to knock out eventual winner Gary Anderson in their dramatic last eight clash in Blackpool – a run which saw him move into the top 16 on the PDC Order of Merit.

It is the first time that two-time ProTour title winner Cullen has reached the all-important top 16 – which would see him seeded at tournaments like that Matchplay and World Grand Prix – and his performance on the European Tour and at the Winter Gardens suggest that his rise may well continue.

Cullen took time to reflect on his performances and the silver lining of his new world ranking position on social media:

Cullen will next be in action at the German Darts Championship in September.
