MICHAEL VAN GERWEN moved into the last 16 of the William Hill World Darts Championship with a 4-1 victory over Max Hopp at Alexandra Palace on Saturday.

The world number one averaged over 100 and landed a sublime 170 checkout to follow up his second round win against Alan Tabern.

“I think I was in control for most of the match, I got a bit sloppy after I went 3-0 up but I never felt in danger,” said Van Gerwen, who will take on either Adrian Lewis or Darius Labanauskas in the fourth round.

“This tournament is like no other, the atmosphere is special and you have to prepare and make sure you play your best game on the big stage.”
