STEVE WEST can continue his rise to prominence in the PDC when he returns to the Winter Gardens stage at the BetVictor World Matchplay on Sunday afternoon.

West defeated a seeded opponent on his debut in Blackpool last year when he knocked Michael Smith out in the first round.

The Essex ace has since enjoyed runs to the last 16 in the World Championship and quarter-finals in the UK Open, highlighting the threat he could pose at the Matchplay.

West takes on World Grand Prix Champion Daryl Gurney in the opening round of this year’s tournament, having beaten the world number five in their most recent meeting.

That victory helped the 43-year-old reach the semi-finals of the Gibraltar Darts Trophy – a feat he repeated in the following European Tour event in Copenhagen.

West is one of the most prolific 180 hitters on the PDC circuit and will be a dangerous opponent for Gurney and any other potential opponents next week and beyond.

‘Matchplay Men’ is a series of preview articles by Chris Murphy, featuring the eight MODUS-represented players who are featuring in the 2018 BetVictor World Matchplay.
