MICHAEL VAN GERWEN clinched his fifth Players Championship finals glory with a thrilling 11-9 final victory over new rival Gerwyn Price in Minehead.

World Champion van Gerwen gained revenge on Price for last weekend’s defeat at the Grand Slam as he edged another exciting encounter between the pair.

The Dutchman had seen off Luke Humphries, Adrian Lewis, James Wade, Mervyn King and Ian White to reach the decider.

“It feels really good,” said Van Gerwen. “I think I deserved it and I was the better player in the final, but even though we didn’t produce our A-game I think it was a great game to watch.

“I missed a few doubles that kept him in the game but I think this final had everything.

“I think Gerwyn is good for darts. He’s exciting and he’s a good player and he has done well lately. He deserves every credit and it will be a great rivalry – but today was my day.”

Van Gerwen will now turn his attentions to defending the World Championship title at Alexandra Palace, where he is bidding to win a fifth crown.
