Andy Jenkins and James Hubbard will compete in the PDC’s seventh European Tour Event of the year after winning through qualifiers in Barnsley on Friday evening.

The pair will take part in September’s German Darts Masters after a successful night’s work in South Yorkshire.

Former World Championship semi-finalist Jenkins qualified for a European Tour event for the first time in 2013 with two fine performances, dropping just one leg in victories over Sam Hill (6-0) and Jim Walker (6-1).

“I played well tonight and I’m over the moon to have qualified,” said Jenkins.

“I’m looking forward to getting out to Germany and I’ll be working hard to put a run together. The European Tour is very important. It has a massive impact on rankings.

“I’m still enjoying my darts and I know I can still beat the best. So it’s onwards and upwards for me from now on.”

2012 World Youth Champion Hubbard also produced some encouraging performances, defeating Chris Aubrey 6-3 before edging out Prakash Jiwa in a last leg decider.

The Norfolk ace then sealed his spot in Sindelfingen with a 6-1 victory against Ricky Sudale.

“I’m happy with how I played,” said the 20-year-old.

“It was probably the best I have played in a long time. If I’m honest, I’ve had a bad year so far so it is pleasing to come into a little bit of form. Hopefully, qualifying for this can be the start of a better second half of the year.”

Simon Whitlock came close to successfully defending his European Championship title but lost out to Adrian Lewis in the final on Sunday.

‘The Wizard’ produced a fantastic run to the tournament decider, defeating Kim Huybrechts and Colin Lloyd before a sensational fightback in his quarter-final.

Whitlock trailed Jamie Caven 9-3 in the last eight but hit back, incredibly taking seven straight legs to seal a 10-9 victory, which he completed with a brilliant 146 finish.

He then saw off Ronny Huybrechts in the semi-finals but ran into a classy display from world number three Lewis, who took the title with a 10-6 victory.

Lewis also ended the hopes of Michael van Gerwen, who bowed out after a brilliant semi-final clash, in which the Dutch star hit nine 180s and took out a 150 finish.

van Gerwen had produced a majestic display in Sunday afternoon’s quarter-final, averaging 105 in his victory over Jelle Klaasen.

Robert Thornton missed out on a place in the last four when he lost a last leg decider against Ronny Huybrechts.

European Darts Championship: Quarter-Finals Round-Up

Simon Whitlock and Michael van Gerwen progressed into the semi-finals of the European Darts Championship with sensational victories in Mulheim on Sunday afternoon.

Whitlock produced an amazing comeback fron 9-3 down to defeat Jamie Caven 10-9, winning the deciding leg with a sublime 146 checkout when his opponent was waiting on 56.

“That came from the heart,” said defending champion Whitlock, who will face Ronny Huybrechts this evening.

“I was thinking about when Andy Hamilton did it to me at the World Matchplay a couple of years ago and I just hung in there and weathered the storm.

“Jamie lost his way a bit when I started coming back and I do feel for him but I am the defending champion and I don’t want to let this title go.”

van Gerwen averaged 105 as he defeated Jelle Klaasen with a brilliant performance, which included seven 180s and a 136 finish for the world number two.

“I really wanted to win this game and I’m very happy to have won it,” said van Gerwen, who takes on Adrian Lewis in the last four.

“It was a quality game and I’m very pleased to be through to the semi-finals.

“I’m looking forward to tonight because I know I can play even better than this so hopefully I can keep on improving in this tournament.

“I think I am the favourite but that means nothing and I’ll make sure I’m prepared for a tough opponent.”

Robert Thornton was denied a semi-final spot after losing out in a last leg decider to Huybrechts.

European Darts Championship: Round Two Round-Up

Michael van Gerwen, Simon Whitlock and Robert Thornton all won through to the quarter-finals of the European Championship with impressive victories on Saturday in Mulheim, Germany.

van Gerwen claimed a commanding win against Mervyn King, Whitlock saw off Colin Lloyd and Thornton completed his first ever success over Raymond van Barneveld.

Dutch star van Gerwen was in imperious form in his 10-3 triumph over King.

The reigning Premier League champion took out four finishes of over 100 and averaged 105 as he set up a last eight tie against Jelle Klaasen.

“I’m really pleased with the win and the performance,” said van Gerwen, the world number two.

“I was glad to improve on yesterday but I had to against Mervyn.

“I hope I can take this form into tomorrow and it could turn out to be a very good day for me.”

Whitlock moved a step closer to a successful defence of his first major title with a 10-6 triumph over Lloyd, which included six 180s for the Australian.

‘The Wizard’, who won the tournament last year, will take on Jamie Caven in Sunday afternoon’s quarter-finals.

“I’m over the moon as I took the couple of chances I had there,” said Whitlock.

“I don’t want to let this title go. I’m like a dog with a bone.

“Colin played very well but I found the shots I needed when I needed them and I’m looking forward to tomorrow.”

Thornton came out on top in an absolute thriller against ‘Barney’, with the Scotsman winning a dramatic last leg decider.

The Scotsman had looked in control when he led 9-7 but van Barneveld forced the last leg shootout, in which both players missed darts to win.

“I thought i had him when i went 9-7 up,” said former UK Open champion Thornton, who faces Ronny Huybrects in the last eight.

“I always do it the hard way but his comeback got into my head a bit so I’m delighted to be through.

“I’m happy going into Sunday after that and I’m looking forward to another great battle.”

James Wade missed out on a quarter-final spot after suffering defeat at the hands of Jamie Caven, while Paul Nicholson was beaten narrowly by Andy Hamilton.

Meanwhile, Huybrechts won through to meet Thornton after knocking out Phil Taylor in a shock victory for the Belgian.

Sunday sees the conclusion of the £200,000 tournament, with the quarter-finals being played out in the afternoon before the semi-finals and final take place in the evening.

European Darts Championship: Nicholson and van Gerwen Progress

0

Paul Nicholson and Michael van Gerwen both won through to the second round of the European Darts Championship with victories on Friday evening in Mulheim.

Nicholson saw off German youngster Max Hopp, while van Gerwen defeated Belgiums Kurt van de Rijck.

The world number two set up a tasty last 16 encounter against Mervyn King after seeing off his Belgian opponent.

“It wasn’t my best performance but I’m happy I won,” said van Gerwen, the reigning Premier League champion.

“It was hard to find my game but I’ll make sure it is there for the next one.

“Winning is the most important thing and I’m through so I am looking forward to tomorrow.”

van Gerwen won the first leg on double one before pegging double four for a break of throw.

He scored his first maximum in leg three, which he won by bedding double top.

But his second maximum couldn’t stop van de Rijck from pulling a leg back.

van Gerwen pinned double 16 to restore his three leg advantage and his third 180 helped him move 5-1 in front.

And the Dutchman finished the job by hitting double four.

Nicholson had to fight back from 3-1 down to defeat Hopp and silence the vociferous home crowd.

Nicholson pegged double 16 to win the opening leg but Hopp took the next three in a row.

‘The Asset’ stopped the rot by pinning double seven and he grabbed a crucial break of throw by taking out 56, restoring parity at three legs apiece.

Hopp broke straight back but Nicholson responded in kind when he neatly took out 65.

And the Australian pegged double top to edge ahead and move withing a leg of victory, and he found the same bed to seal the win.

Nicholson faces Andy Hamilton on Saturday afternoon.

European Darts Championship: Night One Round-Up

Reigning European Champion Simon Whitlock made a fine start to the defence of his title with a first round victory over Kim Huybrechts on Thursday, while there were also wins for James Wade, Robert Thornton and Raymond van Barneveld in Mulheim, Germany.

Whitlock fought off the challenge of Huybrechts in an entertaining affair, which saw the Australian ace race into a 4-1 lead before his opponent took three legs in a row to draw level.

But ‘The Wizard’ grabbed a crucial break of throw at four apiece and went on to see out the victory with a fine 110 finish.

“I’m extremely pleased to have come through that,” admitted Whitlock, who will face Colin Lloyd in round two on Saturday.

“I knew I was in for a real battle when the draw came out and that’s exactly what happened. But I won’t be giving up this title easily, it was the proudest moment of my career when I won here last year and I would love to defend it.

“That’s a long way away yet but I’ve got past an excellent opponent in Kim and I’ll go away and prepare for the next one.”

Wade defeated Mark Webster 6-2 after winning the first three legs and taking out finishes of 80 and 96.

“I’m happy I won but it was difficult to play a friend,” said Wade.

“But I had a job to do and fortunately I got it done. Now I can look forward to the next one and the rest of the tournament.”

Thornton and van Barneveld will meet each other in the last 16 after their respective successes against Brendan Dolan and Tomas Seyler.

Thornton swept past Dolan convincingly, winning 6-2 despite struggling with a pulled muscle in his back, while ‘Barney’ claimed a 6-1 triumph over Germany’s Seyler.

Friday night’s action will see Michael van Gerwen take on Kurt van de Rijck and Paul Nicholson up against Max Hopp

2013 European Darts Championship Preview

Simon Whitlock begins the defence of his European Championship title on Thursday evening, when James Wade, Robert Thornton, Mark Webster and Vincent van der Voort are all also in first round action.

Whitlock won the £200,000 tournament last year, defeating Wez Newton in the final to clinch his maiden major title in the PDC.

The Australian ace faces Belgian star Kim Huybrechts on the opening night of the four-day event in Mulheim, Germany.

‘The Wizard’, who defeated Huybrechts in the semi-finals on his way to glory last year, has set his sites on repeating the feat but knows that he has a tough task on his hands.

“It’s a good feeling to be going back to a major tournament as the defending champion and hopefully it can inspire me to another great tournament,” said Whitlock, the world number five.

“Winning the European Championships last year was a very special and proud moment for me.

“Kim is a really dangerous player and I know I will have to be at my absolute best to get the right result. If I can come through with a victory against Kim, it’s the type of game which will set me up nicely for the rest of the tournament.

“The talent in darts at the moment is unbelievable but I will be doing everything I can to hold on to my title.”

World number four Wade will now face Webster after his a original opponent Gary Anderson had to withdraw through illness.

Welsh left-hander Webster is the automatic replacement as the highest ranked player who had not already qualified.

“Obviously I would like to have been there in normal circumstances,” admitted Webster.

“But this is a bonus for me and I will go to Germany with absolutely nothing to lose. I know the enormity of the task when I face one of the best players in the world on Thursday but I’m not putting any pressure on myself so we’ll see how it goes.”

2012 UK Open champion Thornton continues his hunt for a second PDC major title when he takes on Brendan Dolan, while van der Voort faces four time champion Phil Taylor.

Raymond van Barneveld is also in action on the opening night. The Dutch legend takes on Tomas Seyler.

Friday sees Michael van Gerwen and Paul Nicholson enter the fray with first round ties against Kurt van de Rijck and Max Hopp respectively.

The second round will be played across two sessions on Saturday, with the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final taking place on Sunday.

Michael van Gerwen won his twelfth title of an amazing year so far when he claimed victory in the sixth Players Championship event of 2013 at Crawley’s K2 on Sunday.

But the Dutch sensation stormed back in Sunday’s event, which he kicked off with wins against Kevin Dowling and Richie Burnett, before claiming a 6-0 whitewash over Ronny Huybrechts to reach the quarter-finals.

There, he saw off Andy Smith before hitting back from 5-2 down to defeat Brendan Dolan 6-5 in the last four, where he also missed double twelve for a nine-darter.

The 23-year-old, who rose to super-stardom playing the title role in the Harry Potter film series, may have been a top ‘Quidditch’ player on screen but Radcliffe is actually a huge fan of darts.

Michael van Gerwen, James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld all moved into the last eight of the UK Open with wins on Saturday evening.

The Dutchman saw off Jenkins 9-3 before being drawn against world number one Taylor in a repeat of the World Championship and Premier League finals.

Wade cruised past John Henderson to set up a sixth round clash with Andy Hamilton.

‘The Machine’ triumphed 9-4 against the Scotsman as he bids to win the tournament for a third time.

“I wasn’t at my best and it was lucky for me that John wasn’t either,” said Wade, the 2008 and 2011 winner.

“There is massive strength in depth in the PDC at the moment so it is a huge achievement for me to be in the quarter-finals.

“I’ve just been taking one game at a time and that is all I can continue to do.”

The Dutchman won 9-7, averaging over 100 in the process.

In-form Michael van Gerwen and two-time UK Open champion James Wade stormed into the last 16 with comfortable wins on Saturday afternoon, while Scottish pair Robert Thornton and John Henderson also reached the fifth round in Bolton.

Wade swept past Dave Chisnall, winning 9-2 to keep alive his hopes of winning a third UK Open title.

But the 2008 and 2011 winner, who has won five games to reach the last 16, insisted he is not thinking that far ahead.

He said: “I’m looking forward to my next game, whoever it is against, and that is all I’m going to concentrate on at the moment.

“It’s not about this tournament or any individual tournament for me. It is all about getting things right for a good future in the modern era of darts.

“I’m happy with my results so far and if I step my performance levels up a little bit I can beat anyone.”

Wade will take on Henderson in the evening session for a place in Sunday’s quarter-finals after the Scotsman fought back from 8-6 down to defeat Kevin McDine in a deciding leg.

“It’s a massive win for me,” said Henderson.

“It was very tense at the end and we both missed darts for the match but I was over moon when the last one went in.

“I’m really enjoying this tournament and it is onwards an upwards for me now.”

van Gerwen will face Terry Jenkins in round five after the Dutchman saw off Northern Ireland’s Michael Mansell 9-3.

And the world number two is targeting an improved performance.

“I’m not too happy with how I played in the first two games,” said van Gerwen, who had beaten Mervyn King on Friday.

“I have to concentrate better tonight. Terry is a great player and hopefully that will bring out the best in me.”

Defending champion Robert Thornton won the last four legs to claim a 9-5 win over Kirk Shepherd.

The Premier League star, who will face Raymond van Barneveld on Saturday night admitted he had to work hard for the win.

Thornton said: “Kirk is one of those players who will throw a brilliant leg and then a bad leg so when he puts a run together you can be in trouble.

“I dug in and got the job done though. I played fairly well and I’m happy to be through.

“My game is there and so is my confidence and I’m actually playing better than I did when I won it last year.”

van Barneveld won his fourth round match comfortably, defeating Joey Palfreyman 9-3.

“I knew Matt was a good player,” said Thornton, the world number eleven.

“I didn’t find out I was playing him until this morning because I was asleep and I’ll be doing the same while the draw is on tonight.

“I can’t get a run as hard as last year and I won it then so I’m not bothered about who I get. This tournament is there for anybody to win and if it is me holding the trophy again on Sunday, I’ll be a very happy man.”

Bookies favourite van Gerwen hit six 180s in an impressive 9-5 victory against Mervyn King and immediately set his sights on the £40,000 first prize.

“I really want to win this,” said the Premier League Champion, who has already won ten PDC titles in 2013.

“I didn’t play my best but I won and that is they way it has been going for me recently. In a way it gives me even more confidence.

“I’m on a great run and I want to keep that up for as long as I can. It was tough to take on Mervyn first but that is the way this tournament is and I am happy to play whoever I come up against because you have to beat good players to win things.”

van Barneveld missed double twelve for a nine-dart finish in his thrilling match against Michael Smith, which the Dutchman edged 9-8.

Scotsman John Henderson reached the fourth round for the first time in his career with a 9-7 victory against Scott Rand.

Henderson, who had never previously defeated Rand, had trailed 4-1 and didn’t take the lead until leg 15 but went on to secure an impressive win.

“I’m over the moon with that,” admitted the 40-year-old. “It is a personal achievement for me and emotion took over when the winning double went in.

“I’m not one to celebrate but I couldn’t stop myself then. Scott is a great player and it was a fantastic win for me.

“I take a lot of inspiration from what Robert Thornton did hear last year. I’m not saying that I’m going to do that but I’m delighted tonight and it is a huge confidence boost.”

There was disappointment for Australian pair Simon Whitlock and Paul Nicholson, however. ‘The Wizard’ lost out to Wes Newton while ‘The Asset’ suffered defeat at the hands of John Bowles.

Andy Jenkins was beaten by Stephen Bunting, while Mark Webster was knocked out by Welsh World Cup team-mate Richie Burnett.

The draw for the fourth round will take place on the completion of Friday’s play.

Speedy Services UK Open – Third Round Draw

James Wade will meet Jamie Caven in the third round of the UK Open in Bolton after winning three matches on Thursday evening.

Wade, who has won the tournament twice, dropped just two legs in victories over Robbie Green, Matt Gallett and Wayne Jones to reach Friday’s last 64.

‘The Machine’ will face an in-form Caven, who recently won back-to-back Pro Tour events, while defending champion Robert Thornton will take on Matt Edgar.

Andy Jenkins’ reward for defeating Nigel Heydon 5-4 is a third round showdown with BDO number one Stephen Bunting, while John Henderson, who also took victory on Thursday, will face Scott Rand.

The draw threw up some tasty clashes between players who had both qualified straight through to the third round, including a repeat of the 2012 World Matchplay final between Michael van Gerwen and Mervyn King.

Australian ace Simon Whitlock is set to take on fellow Premier League star Wez Newton, while Mark Webster faces World Cup team-mate Richie Burnett.

Paul Nicholson was drawn against John Bowles and Raymond van Barneveld will take on reigning World Youth Champion Michael Smith.

The third round will take place on Friday with the victorious 32 players going into the draw for Saturday’s fourth round.

Speedy Services UK Open: Night One Round-Up

James Wade dropped just two legs in three matches on Thursday evening has he stormed through to the third round of the UK Open in Bolton, while Andy Jenkins and John Henderson also progressed.

Two-time champion Wade defeated former quarter-finalist Robbie Green 5-2 in a preliminary round tie before securing back-to-back whitewashes.

The 30-year-old swept past Matt Gallett 5-0 to reach the second round, where he saw off Wayne Jones by the same margin.

“It wasn’t as easy as it might look,” admitted Wade, who last won the title in 2011.

“I always believe I can win this but it can be a bit of a lottery on night’s like this so I’m glad I got the job done.”

Jenkins won through to the third round by defeating Nigel Heydon 5-4 and revealed his pride after the victory.

He said: “I love the game and I’m trying to get back to my best. It is hard and I have beaten a very good player tonight so it is a good step for me.”

Scotsman Henderson sealed his spot in round three with a 5-2 victory over Dave Place.

There was disappointment for former World Youth Champions James Hubbard and Arron Monk, however.

The pair both missed out at the second round stage after Hubbard had produced a strong showing in a 5-2 victory over John Scott to get there.

He was beaten 5-3 by Andy Smith, while Monk lost out to Gaz Cousins.

Dutch duo Vincent van der Voort and Co Stompe were both eliminated in round one.

Youngster Keegan Brown, who is sponsored by Simon Whitlock, performed brilliantly to reach round two.

He picked up wins against Keith Rooney and Shaun Griffiths but was denied a place in the hat for the third round draw by Joey Palfreyman.

Another promising youngster, Chris Aubrey, suffered a narrow defeat against Steve Farmer in the preliminary round.

The draw for the third round will be made at the end of Thursday’s play.

Speedy Services UK Open Preview

0

Robert Thornton is preparing to defend the title that reignited his career twelve months ago, while 2008 and 2011 champion James Wade is chasing a trio of UK Open triumphs when the tournament dubbed ‘the FA Cup of darts’ gets underway on Thursday evening in Bolton.

Thornton provided the magic in 2012 as he ended 18 months of turmoil by clinching his first PDC major, despite entering the tournament as a 250-1 outsider.

The Scotsman had been recovering from a broken hand and a devastating bout of pneumonia before producing a string of fantastic performances to knock out a whole host of tournament favourites, culminating in a sensational final victory over Phil Taylor.

And Thornton, who has been in fantastic form ever since, admitted it was a special weekend for him.

“It is a time I will never forget,” said Thornton, who is now eleventh in the PDC Order of Merit and was selected for the 2013 Premier League.

“To have even been in that tournament after the previous 18 months was an achievement but to go and win it was a dream come true.

“It started up my career again and I’m looking forward to going back. I’ve got fabulous memories but more importantly, a title to defend.”

Thornton will begin his defence of the £40,000 first prize in Friday’s third round, having being amongst the top 32 qualifiers alongside Simon Whitlock, Michael van Gerwen, Paul Nicholson, Mark Webster and Raymond van Barneveld.

Wade is in action on Thursday after being drawn in a preliminary round clash against Robbie Green in the tournament’s curtain raiser.

Major titles have been elusive for the 30-year-old since his Bolton success in 2011 but ‘The Machine’ believes that the wait could be over.

He said: Winning it a couple of years ago is a great memory for me. I’ve been getting closer to my best over the last few months. I’m in a good place and I feel like it is a matter of when I start winning tournaments again, not if.

“I was disappointed that I couldn’t find my game in the semi-finals of the Premier League but that is gone now and there are three major tournaments up for grabs in the next couple of months and I hope I can take at least one of them.
“My target for this year is to win a couple of tournaments but if I am going to have a chance of making this the first of them then I will have to start firing straight away. There is no growing into the tournament at the UK Open because of the draw so you have to be ready and I will be.”
Wade will have to win three games to go into the hat for the third round draw, where the 32 second round winners will join the top 32 qualifiers.
Also in opening night action is Dutch ace Vincent van der Voort, who faces Scottish qualifier Andy Murray in a preliminary round match on the main stage.
Youngster Chris Aubrey takes on Steve Farmer for a place in the first round proper, while Keegan Brown, who is sponsored by Whitlock, faces Keith Rooney.
Aubrey could meet Arron Monk in round two.
Andy Jenkins and John Henderson have both also qualified for the second round, with the former facing Nigel Heydon.
Scotsman Henderson, who could meet any one of three potential opponents on Thursday night is hoping that a good run can set him on the way to achieving a personal target.
He said: “The last twelve months have been very difficult. I spent the earlier part of last year recovering from injury and I struggled to get any results.
“My confidence was very low but I feel like I’m getting there now. I had a bit of a break and I think that did me the world of good.
“My goal is to get into the top 32 this year and I take a lot of inspiration from Robert Thornton.”
The 2013 Speedy Services UK Open will run from Thursday June 6 to Sunday June 9.
The open draw for the third round will be made following Thursday night’s play.

Millwall Masters Moved to September

0

The visit of top PDC darts stars to Millwall Football Club has been moved to a new date.

Premier League Darts aces James Wade and Michael van Gerwen are still heading to do battle in Millwall, but will appear a couple of weeks later than originally planned.

The Millwall Masters will now take place on 12 September, and will feature world number two van Gerwen and Wade, who is ranked fourth, alongside three more top players.

Also on show are the charismatic trio of former World Champions Ted Hankey and Andy Fordham and former Players Champion Paul Nicholson.

Wade is the second most successful player in PDC history, having won seven major titles, while van Gerwen, the 2013 Premier League champion, is widely tipped to be a dominant force in darts for years to come.

The event will see four local qualifiers given the chance to take on the professionals. Details of how to qualify will be announced in due course.

World Grand Prix winner van Gerwen, who was a guest of honour at a Millwall home game last season, said: “I’m really looking forward to this event.

“I’m a big football fan and enjoyed visiting the club. I’m looking forward to coming back to show everyone what I do best in what is going to be a great night.

“The line-up for the event is fantastic. We are all players that would expect to meet in the quarters and semi-finals of major tournaments so fans are in for a treat.

“We will put on a good show and I hope the qualifiers will be ready because we will all be out to win!”

The date change is due to unforeseen professional commitments. Customers that have already purchased tickets are advised to contact MODUS Sports Management on 08450 180 180 or original place of purchase.

Nicholson and Thornton Go Close in Wigan

0

Paul Nicholson led the MODUS charge in Wigan by reaching the final of the third Players Championship event of the year on Saturday.

Premier League star Robert Thornton also enjoyed a good run before bowing out at the semi-final stage at Robin Park Tennis Centre.

Both were denied potential glory by eventual winner Jamie Caven.

Nicholson won through to his second Pro Tour final of the year, kicking off with wins against promising youngster Chris Aubrey and Germany’s Jerry Hendriks.

The Australian ace then swept past three experienced opponents in Steve Beaton, Mervyn King and Mark Walsh, before defeating Michael Mansell to reach the last four.

There, he recorded an impressive victory over world number ten Justin Pipe but was edged out by Caven in the final.

Thornton began his campaign for a third title in Wigan this year with early successes against Jason Marriot, Darron Brown and Darren Webster.

The Scotsman defeated Andy Smith to reach the quarter-finals, where he saw off the great Dennis Priestley.

Thornton, who was denied a final spot by Caven, will be looking to continue his strong form on Sunday as he bids to grace the top ten in the PDC Order of Merit for the first time.

Henderson Seals Gibraltar Spot

John Henderson was amongst the qualifiers for Gibraltar Darts Trophy after a successful night at the Robin Park Tennis Centre in Wigan on Friday.

The Scotsman defeated Geoff Whitworth and compatriot Keith Stephen to secure his place in the main draw for the European Tour Event, which takes place from June 28-30.

The £100,000 tournament is being held at the Victoria Stadium in Gibraltar.

van Gerwen is First Dubai Darts Master

0

Michael van Gerwen won the first ever Dubai Duty Free Darts Masters, completing an amazing week with an excellent 11-7 final victory over Raymond van Barneveld on Thursday evening.

‘Mighty Mike’, who has also triumphed in the Premier League and European Masters in the last eight days, produced stunning finishes of 164 and 170 to cap a fine string of performances.

The Dutch ace had defeated Wes Newton and Andy Hamilton to set up a last two clash with compatriot van Barneveld.

“There was a little payback there because Raymond beat me in the Grand Slam, but I always enjoy playing him and it was a great final,” van Gerwen told the PDC’s official website.

“I think, with all the conditions, I played very well and put in some great averages and hit the 170 finish and 164 finish at good moments in the final so that was important to make me the champion.”

James Wade had become the first PDC player to win a professional game outdoors when he defeated Simon Whitlock in a thrilling quarter-final match on Thursday.

But ‘The Machine’ was denied a place in the final by ‘Barney’.

PDC Chairman Barry Hearn has revealed that the tournament will return to Dubai in 2014.

He said: “We’re looking forward to building on this because the crowd have created a fantastic atmosphere.

“We’ve had over 5,000 fans visit the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium for the tournament and millions watching around the world, and I’m sure we can sell out next year’s event.”

van Gerwen Takes Euro Title With Whitlock Win

0

Michael van Gerwen’s sensational run of success continued on Sunday evening as he won the European Darts Open in Dusseldorf with a 6-2 final victory over Simon Whitlock.

The 24-year-old Dutch star, who was crowned as Premier League Darts Champion on Thursday, followed it up by claiming his eight PDC title of 2013.

‘Mighty Mike’ defeated Andre Welge, Wayne Jones, Terry Jenkins, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright to reach the final, where he saw off ‘The Wizard’ to clinch the £20,000 first prize.

“It’s been a brilliant few days,”  van Gerwen told the PDC’s official website.

“I’m a bit tired at the moment but winning is the most important thing, and I’m very glad I saved my best game for the final.

“Simon beat me the last time we played in a final and I knew I needed to play a proper game to beat him, and I think I showed my class with a very good performance tonight.”

The highlight of Whitlock’s charge to the final was a dazzling display in his last eight triumph over Justin Pipe, when the Australian hit eight 180s and took out a 170 finish.

van Gerwen and Whitlock will join the likes of James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld in Dubai next week as the top eight player in world darts compete in the inaugural Dubai Duty Free Darts Masters.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: van Gerwen Takes Title

0

Michael van Gerwen defeated Phil Taylor to win the McCoy’s Premier League at London’s O2 Arena on Thursday, while James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld bowed out at the semi-final stage.

Dutch ace van Gerwen avenged January’s World Championship final defeat to ‘The Power’ with a thrilling victory over the world number one.

The 24-year-old prevailed by ten legs to eight and sealed the biggest win of his career with a spectacular 132 finish, completing the three-dart combination on the bull.

“I’m so happy to win this Premier League and it is a dream come true,” said ‘Mighty Mike’, who clinched his second PDC major title after winning October’s World Grand Prix.

“It was important for me to get this win after losing to Phil at the World Championships. I was a bit sick about that but this was my night, my tournament.

“I think I deserved to win it and Phil played really well so I had to show my class. It is my best moment and I hope there will be many more like this.”

van Gerwen trailed six-time and defending champion Taylor 5-2 before putting together a brilliant run of five consecutive legs to take charge of the final.

The 16-time World Champion hit back though as he broke van Gerwen’s throw before the youngster declined a shot at the bull, only for Taylor to produce a stunning 160 checkout.

With parity restored at seven legs apiece, world number two van Gerwen responded with one of his nine 180s before pegging double top to edge back ahead.

He then broke Taylor’s throw to close in on victory but missed two match darts at double eight in the following leg, allowing his opponent to keep the match alive.

But van Gerwen ensured victory before the prospect of a deciding leg when he produced a sensational 132 finish to clinch the £150,00 first prize and title of 2013 Premier League Champion.

He added: “Phil started off really well but being 5-2 down probably took a little bit of pressure off me and I settled down after the break.

“I was gutted when I missed the two darts at double eight but that didn’t matter when I hit that bull to win.

“I’m so proud. I have loved every minute of this Premier League and to win it like that, by beating the greatest player ever in the final, is very special.”

It was the first time that Taylor had lost in the final of the £520,000 tournament and he was chasing his seventh victory when he saw off van Barneveld in the last four.

van Gerwen had ended 2009 champion Wade’s chances of winning his eighth major title with an 8-4 semi-final success over ‘The Machine’.

Wade said after the defeat: “I wasn’t good enough and Michael was. That’s the story of it.

“I missed too many doubles and he punished me for being messy.”

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Play-Offs Preview

0

James Wade and Michael van Gerwen will go head to head in the semi-finals of the McCoy’s Premier League on Thursday, when the final four will compete for the prestigious title.

Wade, a former winner of the £520,000 tournament, meets ‘Mighty Mike’ who topped the table in his debut season, as the 14 week elite darts showcase reaches its climax at London’s O2 Arena.

Raymond van Barneveld takes on defending champion Phil Taylor in the other clash of a semi-final line-up that is identical to the last four stage of January’s World Championship.

Seven-time PDC major title winner Wade believes that the tournament, which he won in 2009, is there for the taking.

“I really don’t think anyone can confidently pick a winner this year,” said ‘The Machine’.

“You’ve got four quality players, who are all capable of fantastic things so it’s all on the night.

“Michael van Gerwen is playing brilliant but we’ve had some close games recently. I’ll just concentrate on my own game and I know I what I can do.

“His strength his scoring and mine is finishing so I hope we both go up and play our best games because it could be something really great.

“I want to win a couple of majors this year and I’m hoping the first one comes my way on Thursday.”

World number two van Gerwen is chasing his second televised success in the PDC after losing two major finals since winning the World Grand Prix in October.

He said: “I want to win this Premier League. Finishing first in the table was a nice thing for me but now I have to follow it up.

“I have two more matches hopefully and I need to win them both.

“Everybody keeps saying I will win a lot in the future but you never know how your form might change.

“I’m playing well now and I want to make it count now.”

van Barneveld has set his sights on reaching a first Premier League final after five unsuccessful attempts.

But the Dutchman knows he has his work cut out against a player he is yet to beat in the competition.

“I had a good chance to beat Phil Taylor in the league this year,” said ‘Barney’, the five-time World Champion.

“But maybe that wasn’t my time. I hope Thursday night is. If I play like I can then I can do it.

“Five times I have lost in the semis so to make the final, just once, would be great for me and to win the whole tournament would be a dream come true.”

Whoever does take glory on Thursday will scoop a £150,000 first prize – the second largest winners cheque on the PDC tour.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night 14 Round-Up

0

James Wade secured the final McCoy’s Premier League semi-final spot, as Michael van Gerwen finished top of the table following the final night of league action in Newcastle on Thursday evening.

The pair will now meet in the play-off’s on finals night, which take place at London’s O2 next week.

Wade shared a draw with world number one Phil Taylor with a gutsy display.  A point proved to be enough for ‘The Machine’ to progress after Robert Thornton suffered two defeats and Simon Whitlock took a point from his two matches, ending the pairs’ semi-final aspirations.

“It was nervy but I did enough and that draw was bigger than any win I’ve had all season,” Wade told www.pdc.tv  “I feel fresh now and I’m ready for the Play-Offs.

“Michael’s a brilliant player, but I’m also pretty good myself and I think it’s the most even Premier League ever. I don’t think anybody could pick a player to win it.

“I still haven’t played great, and apart probably from five games where I played well and in other games I rode my luck and got through them. I’ll prepare right for the Play-Offs and I’m looking forward to it.”

van Gerwen became the only player other than Taylor to end the season as the league leader after producing a thrilling performance to defeat Thornton.

“It was a big target for me and it’s a very special moment for me,” said van Gerwen. “It means a lot to me and you can see how difficult it is to finish top because nobody has ever done it other than Phil.

“It was important to win tonight with a very good game, and I can look forward to playing James in the semi-finals now. He’s a quality player who knows exactly how to win games, but I just want to play my own game, like I did tonight.”

Raymond van Barneveld finished in second place after securing two victories in Newcastle. ‘Barney’ will face Taylor next Thursday as he bids to reach the final for the first time.

Thornton & van Gerwen Grab Glory in Wigan

0

Robert Thornton and Michael van Gerwen claimed triumphs in the first two Players Championships of 2013 in Wigan at the weekend.

The pair warmed up for the final night of McCoy’s Premier League action on Thursday by each collecting the recently increased first prizes of £10,000.

Thornton, who is chasing a Premier League play-off place when he meets van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld in Newcastle, took Saturday’s title with brilliant run at Robin Park.

The Scottish ace stormed to a 6-0 final success over Ronnie Huybrechts, averaging over 111 to seal his second Pro Tour victory of the year.

van Gerwen claimed his sixth floor tournament success on Sunday when he saw off Stuart Kellet 6-1 in the final.

‘Mighty Mike’ needs a point from his match with ‘The Thorn’ to finish top of the Premier League table in his debut season.

McCoy’s Premier League: Night 13 Round-Up

0

Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld sealed McCoy’s Premier League play-off places, leaving James Wade, Robert Thornton and Simon Whitlock to battle it out of the final top four spot after a dramatic night in Liverpool on Thursday.

van Gerwen’s victory over Andy Hamilton saw the 24-year-old reach the semi-finals on his debut season with one week of league action remaining.

And the Dutchman, who triumphed 7-4 against ‘The Hammer’, has set his sights on becoming the only player other than Phil Taylor, who has also qualified for the play-offs, to finish top of the table.

“I was always confident of making the top four but I am proud to have done it,” admitted van Gerwen, the world number two.

“Now I want to finish first. That would be a great achievement because only Phil has done it.

“It will be amazing to play in the Play-Offs at the O2 in London. I lost out in the youth final there last year so I really want to go and win the Premier League.”

van Barneveld can still catch his compatriot after enjoying a 7-4 success against Adrian Lewis in Merseyside to cement his place in the semi-finals.

Whitlock’s victory over Wade kept him in contention while Thornton can still make the top four despite losing out Taylor.

Wade, who also lost out to Hamilton, sits in the fourth and final play-off spot ahead of the last night of the league phase.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night 13 Preview

0

Michael van Gerwen, James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld could secure their places in the McCoy’s Premier League play-offs when the tournament visits Liverpool on Thursday.

But Simon Whitlock and Robert Thornton can keep their bids to reach the top four alive with victories on the penultimate night of the league stage.

Table-topping van Gerwen needs just a point from his match against Andy Hamilton after missing the chance to cement his place in the finals, which take place at London’s O2 in a fortnight, with defeat to Whitlock last week.

The 24-year-old Dutch ace bounced back to win his fifth UK Open qualifier from the series of eight events on Sunday, however, and is determined to take that form to Merseyside.

He told the PDC’s official website: “Winning on Sunday was good preparation for me because I’ve got a couple of tough weeks ahead in the Premier League.

“Last week was disappointing for me and I don’t like losing, but it’s part of the game and you can’t win for 14 weeks in a row. I missed too many doubles but it’s a new game this week and I’ve got to make sure I win against Andy.”

Thornton will need to complete a historic double over reigning champion Phil Taylor in order to stay in contention for a play-off spot.

‘The Scotsman’, whose victory over ‘The Power’ in Brighton was his third in their last four televised meetings, would be the first player in the Premier Leagues eight year history to defeat the 16-time World Champion twice in one season should he repeat the feat in Liverpool.

‘The Thorn’ conceded that Taylor, who is looking to cement his top four position, will be out for revenge.

He’ll be out for my blood!” said Thornton.

“I’m just going to go up on stage and do my best and enjoy myself, and whatever happens will happen.

“You’ve got to thrive playing against the best players and I’ve done that for most of this season. If you don’t play at your best then they’ll run riot against you.”

Wade will qualify for the play-offs if he wins both of his matches on Thursday, as he takes on Whitlock and Hamilton, who both need wins and other results to go their way to stay in with a chance of a place in the finals.

van Barneveld faces Adrian Lewis, the only player that is mathematically out of the running for a top four finish, with the Dutchman hoping to seal his play-off place after missing out last year.

UK Open Qualifiers Confirmed

Michael van Gerwen topped the Order of Merit after winning five of the eight ranked Speedy Services UK Open qualifiers, as fellow Premier League stars James Wade, Robert Thornton, Simon Whitlock and Raymond van Barneveld all booked their places at the Bolton tournament.

van Gerwen won the final event of the 2013 series on Sunday, when the field of qualifiers for June’s finals were confirmed.

As one of the top 32 in the final Order of Merit, ‘Mighty Mike’ gains automatic entry to the third round on Friday June 7 along with reigning champion Thornton, Whitlock, van Barneveld, Paul Nicholson and Mark Webster.

Andy Jenkins qualified for the second round on Thursday June 6 as he collected £1,800 in prize money and returned to the top 64 in the world rankings.

Joining ‘Rocky’ in round two are Co Stompe, John Henderson and Arron Monk, while Wade, Chris Aubrey, Vincent van der Voort and James Hubbard all also qualified for the tournament and will compete in the first round on the Thursday.

Robert Thornton secured a brilliant McCoy’s Premier League double in Birmingham, where Simon Whitlock defeated Michael van Gerwen on Thursday evening.

Thornton kept up the heat on the top four with victories against Andy Hamilton and Adrian Lewis at the NIA.

“It was an important couple of wins for me,” admitted the Scotsman, who faces Phil Taylor next week in Liverpool.

“I have slipped up a bit in the last couple of weeks but I’ve kept myself in it and I’m looking forward to the challenge of reaching the play-offs.

“I’ve had the better of Phil in our last few matches so if that continues then I’ve got a great chance of closing the gap.”

Whitlock was denied a double when he lost out to Taylor after seeing off league leader van Gerwen earlier in the evening.

Raymond van Barneveld came out on top in his match against James Wade, while Lewis lost to Taylor in the other match of the night.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Twelve Preview

Michael van Gerwen can secure his place at the McCoy’s Premier League play-off finals with a positive result in Birmingham, where James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld will be looking to move closer to cementing their places inside the top four.

Simon Whitlock and Robert Thornton are also in the race to compete in the tournament’s finale in May ahead of the twelfth night of action on Thursday.

League leader van Gerwen is hoping to celebrate his 24th birthday by obtaining the point that would guarantee his place at London’s O2 in next month’s finals night but his opponent Simon Whitlock knows the importance of securing victory to keep his own bid alive.

Whitlock, who hit a nine-dart finish in last year’s play-offs and finished as runner-up, faces a double-header against world number two van Gerwen and the highest ranked player, Phil Taylor. But ‘The Wizard’ insisted that he is not daunted by the challenge.

“I’ve got the top two players in the world rankings but I’ll be looking to do some damage,” warned Whitlock, who has claimed back-to-back victories since surviving relegation.

“I know that I can beat both of these guys but you’ve got to play one match at a time. I need to get at least six points out of my next five matches to have a chance of reaching the play-offs but I’m going in the right direction.”

Second and third place will go head to head in Birmingham as Wade and van Barneveld clash at the NIA.

After the pair shared a draw in their previous meeting, Wade is confident of getting a result against the Dutch star.

“I won’t lose to him,” said ‘The Machine’, speaking to www.pdc.tv

“We drew the last time we played and I was awful. I had gastroenteritis and hadn’t slept for two days and I still got a draw.

“He has been getting good results but I don’t think he is at his very best and I’m starting to get closer to mine so I look forward to playing him.”

Thornton takes on Stoke pair Andy Hamilton and Adrian Lewis and is looking to close the gap on the top four, or even climb back into it, after falling two points behind fourth-placed Taylor.

“My focus is on the reaching the play-offs now,” said the Scottish ace.

“That can only be achieved one game at a time though and it starts again with a tough match on Thursday.

“A win against Andy started what has been an amazing first season in the McCoy’s Premier League for me and hopefully another one can kick-start my play-off push.

“Whatever happens then I have to prepare for Adrian Lewis. It will be a difficult night but it could be a very sweet one if it goes right.”

Taylor and Lewis face each other in the evening’s other match.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Eleven Round-Up

James Wade and Michael van Gerwen tightened their hold on McCoy’s Premier League play-off positions, while Simon Whitlock kept himself in the race on Thursday evening in Dublin.

Wade secured a 7-4 victory against Robert Thornton to move onto 16 points in second place behind van Gerwen, who increased his lead at the top to four points with two wins at the O2.

‘Mighty Mike’, who also claimed four points in Sheffield last week, upped his debut season tally to 20 with triumphs over Raymond van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis.

The Dutch star averaged over 106 in his 7-4 success against ‘Barney’, who shared a draw with Phil Taylor to boost his bid to stay in the top four.

Whitlock earned an impressive 7-3 victory over Andy Hamilton, who had lost out to Taylor in the opening match of the night.

van Gerwen, whose exploits included finishes of 152 and 158, admitted his delight at his Dublin double.

“This is the biggest crowd I’ve played in front of and it felt great,” said van Gerwen who also won a UK Open qualifier last Sunday.

“My confidence is high and I’m very happy with how I’ve done in this Premier League.

“I have great people behind me and I am enjoying everything at the moment.

“It is difficult playing two games but I’ve won them both times and now I just need to win once every week.”

The race for May’s finals night continues in Birmingham next Thursday.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Eleven Preview

Michael van Gerwen is hoping to extend his lead at the top of the McCoy’s Premier League with another double-header in Dublin, where James Wade, Robert Thornton, Raymond van Barneveld and Simon Whitlock will bid to boost their play-off chances.

van Gerwen, who took four points from two matches in Sheffield last week, faces van Barneveld and Adrian Lewis on the eleventh night of action in what is proving to be a fabulous debut season for the young Dutchman.

Victories over Wade and World Champion Phil Taylor pulled ‘Mighty Mike’ two points clear of the chasing pack at the top of the table and the reigning World Grand Prix champion has his eyes set on increasing that advantage in front of 10,000 fans at the O2 Arena.

He told the PDC’s official website: “I’m top of the table now and I want to keep my place there.

“I’m really happy with how I’m playing and I’m very confident at the moment.

“Last week was a difficult night for me but I walked away with four points against Phil Taylor and James Wade, and it would be great to do it again in Dublin.

“I like to play Raymond, and I think it’s a game that everyone else likes to see at the moment too because we’ve had some great matches in the Grand Slam final and at the Premier League earlier this year.

“I’m looking forward to playing Adrian too because he beat me earlier this season, so it would be nice to win this time. It’s two big games for me in a great venue and I’m going to enjoy it.”

Second-placed Wade goes head to head with Thornton, who is currently occupying the final play-off spot.

van Barneveld faces the tough task of taking on van Gerwen and Taylor in the same evening, while Whitlock is hoping victory against Andy Hamilton can put him firmly in the race for May’s finals night.

“It’s another huge game against somebody above me in the table,” said the Australian, who won a UK Open qualifying tournament at the weekend.

“Andy is a tremendous player and really tough to beat because he is so gritty.

“I’ve got eight points at the moment and am probably going to need at least 15 or 16 to make the top four.

“There’s a lot of work to do but there’s still six games left for me to play and a lot can happen in that time.”

van Gerwen and Whitlock Grab Wigan Weekend Wins

0

Simon Whitlock and Michael van Gerwen both picked up Pro Tour victories in Wigan at the weekend.

Whitlock won Saturday’s UK Open Qualifier Five with an excellent final victory over van Gerwen, who went on to win Sunday’s event – his fourth success out of the six floor events played so far this year.

‘The Wizard’ produced some magic on Saturday to win through a tough field of players competing to gain entry for June’s UK Open.

He fought back from 5-1 down to defeat Ian White 6-5 in the quarter-finals before seeing off Peter Wright to reach the final, where he claimed an impressive 6-1 win against world number two van Gerwen.

“This is one of the best wins I’ve ever had. I’m absolutely thrilled to bits,” Whitlock told the PDC’s official website.

“I had a bit of luck earlier on but I played really well in the final and I’m over the moon.

“At 5-1 down against Ian White you don’t expect to win, but I somehow pulled one out of the bag and got there. You need a little bit of luck sometimes and I got that today, and I just rode with it.”

van Gerwen, whose run to Saturday’s final included a second victory in three days against World Champion Phil Taylor, clinched Sunday’s £6,000 first prize by edging past Kim Huybrechts in the final.

His best performance en route to glory was a 6-1 semi-final success over Michael Smith, with the Dutchman averaging over 112.

“I’m very proud of myself but I can still do better than this,” van Gerwen told the PDC’s official website.

“It feels so good to get another win. I’m very confident at the moment and that has a lot to do with it because I’m even winning bad games and I’m doing very well.

“I’m playing well and I’m happy with my form – in the semi-final against Michael Smith I threw some great darts. It was a fabulous game and I enjoyed it – but I still had to win the final and it was a very important win for me.”

Whitlock and van Gerwen will now turn their attentions back to the McCoy’s Premier League, which continues in Dublin on Thursday evening.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Ten Round-Up

Michael van Gerwen moved clear at the top of the McCoy’s Premier League as James Wade, Simon Whitlock and Raymond van Barneveld all also grabbed important victories in Sheffield on Thursday evening.

van Gerwen claimed a brilliant triumph against world number one Phil Taylor before going on to edge out Wade, who had earlier seen off Adrian Lewis with an equally delightful display at the Motorpoint Arena.

van Gerwen, who also faces a double-header in Dublin next Thursday, was delighted with his evening’s exploits.

“To beat Phil Taylor in the Premier League was a huge moment for me,” said the world number two.

“I had targeted at least two points tonight so to go on and take on all four makes me very happy.

“I felt that I was much the better player against Phil and then I had to win a game that wasn’t as good against James.

“Maybe, playing twice affected us both but winning is the most important thing.”

The tenth night of action began with Whitlock, who survived a relegation scare last week, getting back to winning ways against Robert Thornton.

Wade then swept past Lewis with a 7-2 success, in which ‘The Machine’ averaged around 104 and hit five 180s before van Gerwen took to the stage against Taylor in a repeat of January’s World Championship final.

‘The Power’ prevailed on that occasion but ‘Mighty Mike’ stormed to victory in Yorkshire, also averaging 104 in a comfortable 7-3 triumph.

van Barneveld then earned a hard fought win against Andy Hamilton to leave himself tied on 14 points with Wade and van Gerwen at the top of the table.

It was van Gerwen who was to take a clear lead as he increased his tally to 16 with a 7-5 victory over the 2009 champion.

Next Thursday sees the tournament reach Dublin, where ‘Barney’ will take on Taylor and van Gerwen, who will also face Lewis.

Wade and Thornton will do battle at the O2, where Whitlock will play Hamilton.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Ten Preview

James Wade and Michael van Gerwen are both preparing for a double header in Sheffield, which sees the pair play their tenth and eleventh fixtures of the McCoy’s Premier League Darts season.

The top of the table duo are set to face each other in final fixture of the night in South Yorkshire, where Wade will also face Adrian Lewis and van Gerwen takes on Phil Taylor.

They are the first of the players who will have to play two fixtures in one evening following the elimination of Wes Newton and Gary Anderson in Brighton last Thursday.

‘Mighty Mike’, who lost out to Wade just a fortnight ago in Glasgow is looking forward to the challenge.

“I’d like to play five games every evening,” said van Gerwen, who is joint top of the league with Wade and Raymond van Barneveld.

“That’s not going to happen I know but I will enjoy playing two.

“I like to play darts and I like to win. I don’t really care about playing more games because I like darts and I don’t worry about anything apart from winning each game.”

Second-placed Wade also goes into the evening in fine form after defeating Anderson last week and hitting seven doubles out of eight attempts in the process.

“My finishing is going well,” said Wade, the 2009 champion.

“But my scoring is getting there as well now and I’m feeling great.

“I’ve still got a lot more in the locker so hopefully I will peak at the right time as I’m definitely in it to win it.”

van Barneveld, who secured a fine win over Lewis last Thursday, faces Andy Hamilton in Sheffield, while Robert Thornton, who currently occupies the other play-off slot takes on Judgement Night survivor Simon Whitlock.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Nine Round-Up

Robert Thornton stunned Phil Taylor with a brilliant performance in Brighton, while James Wade and Michael van Gerwen moved joint top of the McCoy’s Premier League on Thursday evening.

Thornton moved into the play-off places at the expense of world number one Taylor as the Scotsman continued to impress on his debut season.

The reigning UK Open champion averaged well over 100 for the second week running as he claimed an impressive 7-4 success over ‘The Power’.

The victory moved ‘The Thorn’ onto eleven points and third in the table, as attention turns to the race for the play-offs after Wes Newton and Gary Anderson suffered relegation.

“I’m very proud of myself,” admitted Thornton, who has now won three of his last four televised matches against Taylor.

“Not just for tonight but for how I’ve taken to the Premier League so far.

“It was a huge relief to have not been in the relegation fight tonight so I just relaxed an enjoyed myself.”

Wade defeated Anderson in convincing fashion, with ‘The Machine’ hitting seven out of eight attempts at doubles en route to a 7-3 triumph.

“It is going really well this year,” said Wade, the 2009 winner.

“It wasn’t nice to knock Gary out of the tournament but I had a job to do and I did it.

“It puts me in a good position to reach the play-offs.

“I’ve set myself a target of winning two majors this year and hopefully this can be the first of those.”

van Gerwen joined Wade at the summit of the table with victory over Simon Whitlock, who survived relegation despite the defeat.

Raymond van Barneveld claimed a comfortable victory over Adrian Lewis to join van Gerwen and Wade on twelve points, while Andy Hamilton defeated Newton in the other match of the evening.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Nine Preview

Simon Whitlock faces a ‘Judgement Night’ showdown in Brighton as he and three other players battle to avoid being the first ever casualties of the new relegation format of the McCoy’s Premier League, which will see two players eliminated on Thursday night.

Whitlock, who has six points from the first eight weeks of action, faces Michael van Gerwen at the Brighton centre in the knowledge that victory will ensure his safety from the dreaded drop.

However, van Gerwen will prove a tough opponent as one of the players in a four way tie at the top of the table in the tightest ever staging of the tournament in it’s nine year history.

“I know it will be tough,” admitted Australian ace Whitlock.

“But every game has been tough for all of us. That is why it is so close.

“Whoever stays up will then have a great chance of going on to reach the play-offs.

“The good thing for me is that is in my own hands and I believe in myself. Hopefully, I have saved my best performance for when it really matters.”

Whitlock may avoid relegation before he faces ‘Mighty Mike’ if other results go his way.

James Wade takes on Gary Anderson and victory for ‘The Machine’ paired with defeat for Wes Newton against Andy Hamilton would see ‘The Wizard’ reach safety.

Wade, who is also on ten points after seeing off van Gerwen in Glasgow last week, is hoping continue his good form against 2011 winner Anderson, who is currently in the relegation zone.

“I want to keep playing well and winning games to reach the play-offs,” said 2009 champion Wade.

“It won’t be a nice thing to beat someone and relegate them but while it may be new in the Premier League it’s nothing new in darts.

“In most tournaments if you win, the other player goes out so I will just have that attitude against Gary.”

Raymond van Barneveld, another of the joint leaders, takes on Adrian Lewis and a victory for the Dutch legend would leave ‘Jackpot’ in danger of elimination and awaiting other results.

Robert Thornton takes on Phil Taylor in the only match that won’t affect the relegation battle.

The Scotsman reached safety with victory over Whitlock last week and is in a relaxed mood ahead of his tie against the world number one.

“Bring on Mr Taylor,” said Thornton, who defeated the 16-time World Champion twice on TV last year – including in the final of the UK Open.

“I know I can beat him and he knows he can beat me so it is all about how we perform on the night.

“I’m just glad to not be scrapping for survival and I can just concentrate on a game of darts.”

European Darts Trophy Round-Up: Nicholson Comes Close to Glory

0

Paul Nicholson was denied victory in a dramatic final of the European Darts Trophy in Sindelfingen as he was edged out by Wes Newton on Monday evening after a brilliant run.

‘The Asset’ scooped the £10,000 runners-up prize but two missed darts at doubles proved the difference between winning the tournament, with Newton taking a 6-5 victory in Germany.

Nevertheless, Nicholson, who was also runner-up at the Dutch Darts Masters last year, can take great pride from his performances over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend, which included an impressive semi-final victory over the new world number two Michael van Gerwen.

‘The Asset’ began his campaign in the PDC’s second European Tour event of 2013 with a 6-5 defeat of Belgian ace Ronny Huybrechts on Saturday.

He then went on to see off Colin Lloyd by the same score-line on Sunday after launching an incredible comeback from 5-1 down to reach the last 16.

There the Australian star fought off the challenge of Yorkshireman Dean Winstanley, winning 6-4, before progressing past Mark Webster in the quarter-finals.

Nicholson, the 2010 Players Champion, produced a fantastic performance in the last four to claim a 6-2 triumph against van Gerwen but narrowly missed out on victory in the deciding leg in the final.

“I’m so glad that I came to Germany,” said Nicholson, who is appearing at the Allstars of Andover later this year.

He told the PDC’s official website: “It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride this weekend but I set myself a goal when I came here and I put myself within touching distance of that.

“I’m very proud of myself but I’m feeling gutted right now because I had a shot to win the tournament, but I feel that this can kick-start my year now.”

van Gerwen’s run to the semi-final help him leapfrog Adrian Lewis in the Order of Merit to a career high second place.

Webster also enjoyed a fine run of results as he defeated the likes of Andy Hamilton and Ian White before losing out to Nicholson.

‘Topless’ Darts Stars to Brush Up on Style

Five of the world’s leading darters are preparing to go ‘topless’ for a major tournament after agreeing to swap their trademark shirts for paint!

To celebrate its involvement in the fast-growing sport, Leyland Paints has created a Professional Darts Colour Card taking inspiration from the shirt colours of world number three, four and five players Michael van Gerwen, James Wade and Simon Whitlock, as well as Robert Thornton and Mark Webster.

That has prompted the quintet of oche favourites to agree to take to the stage at the UK Open at Bolton in June without their shirts, and instead cover their entire upper body in Leyland Paint, sprayed in their respective darts shirt colour.

“There are going to be some interesting sights with the five of us covered in sprayed on Leyland paint but it will be great fun,” said 44-year-old Australian Whitlock.

“I think my throwing arm will be freed up by replacing the shirt with spray paint so I’m convinced that all five of us will have a great tournament.”

The Colours of the Darts Scene card includes van Gerwen Green, named after the rising Dutch star, and Wizard Yellow for Whitlock.

Wade and Thornton will be represented by Machine Black and Thorny Blue, while former BDO world champion Webster who is nicknamed Webby will be sprayed in Red Back Spider for the UK Open.

Flight White and Oche Matt complete the card, which is called ‘Colours of the Darts Scene’.

“The inspiration for the colours came from the darter’s shirts and are all colours from the Leyland Trade colour range,” said Vicky Jones, stockist brand manager for Leyland Paints.

“We have given the colours special darts names for the occasion. After all, colour is highly emotive and these Colours of the Darts Scene certainly get the players in the mood for winning. You too could win with Leyland!”

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Eight Round-Up

James Wade and Robert Thornton sealed impressive victories on night eight of the McCoy’s Premier League in Glasgow on Thursday evening.

Wade defeated Michael van Gerwen with another display of ruthless finishing to put himself on ten points alongside his Dutch opponent, Raymond van Barneveld and Phil Taylor in the play-off places.

‘The Machine’ took out finishes of 135, 134 and 130 to seal the win.

“This game is all about finishing and that’s been my strength again,” said Wade, who takes on relegation-threatened Gary Anderson in Brighton next week.

“Everyone knows the form that Michael has been in but mine has been picking up and nobody scares me.

“I’m putting the work in this year and it’s showing in my performances.”

Thornton assured he would not be involved in the ‘Judgement Night’ relegation scrap as he produced an excellent display in defeating Simon Whitlock.

‘The Thorn’ moved onto nine points after averaging over 107 to delight his home crowd, while ‘Barney’ was beaten by Taylor.

The night’s results mean Whitlock may have to get a result against van Gerwen if he is to avoid relegation in Brighton next week.

Raymond van Barneveld will reignite his rivalry with world number one Phil Taylor in Glasgow, where James Wade and Michael and van Gerwen will meet on Thursday evening.

‘Barney’ will meet the ‘The Power’ for the first time since their high profile World Championship semi-final clash at Alexandra Palace.

But the Dutchman, who is one of two players already safe from the threat of relegation, says the pair have left that affair in the past.

“We’ve solved what happened at the World Championship and we’re still friends,” van Barneveld told www.pdc.tv

“We’ll forget all about that game this week and I have to because it’s a big game.

“In all these years in the Premier League I’ve never beaten him and only got one draw, so it would be a dream to beat him. I know I can do it but I’ll have to lift my game from last week when I drew with James Wade.

“This is a shorter format than the World Championship, the best of 12 legs, so I know I have to start well. I didn’t play my game in the first four or five sets the last time we played and I’m not sure why.

“Perhaps it was because he is Phil Taylor, but I played so many great matches in the World Championship up to that point and against him I didn’t turn up.

“When I did turn up I was 5-1 down and it was a tough battle because from that far behind against Phil Taylor you’re never going to beat him.”

Wade will do battle with the other player who can’t be relegated in van Gerwen – in another repeat of the World Championship semi-finals.

Simon Whitlock and Robert Thornton will both be looking to add to their points tally and move closer to safety when they go head to head, with ‘The Thorn’ enjoying home advantage.

Gary Anderson meets Wes Newton while Adrian Lewis and Andy Hamilton do battle in the evening’s other matches.

The ten Premier League players will then become eight when they head to Brighton for the final week of action before relegation in what is being billed as ‘Judgement Night’.

Premier League Darts Stars Back in Belfast

0

It all started in Belfast back at the beginning of February when thousands of darts fans packed into the Odyssey Arena to see the best arrow flingers in the world showcase their talent.

Now, three of the stars of the incredibly popular Premier League Darts are heading back to the city to treat fans to another night of superb sporting entertainment.

Table-topping Dutch duo Michael van Gerwen and Raymond van Barneveld spearhead the brilliant line-up on show at the inaugural Belfast Masters, which takes place at The Devenish Entertainment and Leisure Complex next Friday (5 April), to take on some local hopefuls and fellow professionals.

They will be joined by Simon Whitlock following the much-hyped ‘Judgement Night’ which will see hundreds of thousands of viewers tune in to see which two stars will suffer the fate of relegation from the Thursday night tournament.

Over a thousand fans are set to flock to the Devenish to see their darting heroes in more intimate surroundings, with VIP ticket holders getting the exclusive chance to meet the players.

Northern Ireland’s very own History Maker Brendan Dolan will also compete in the biggest darts show Belfast has ever seen aside from the Premier League itself.

Four local men have earned the right to share the stage with the darting elite. Gary Elliot, Dave McCusker and two players with the same name, John Elder, will take on the professionals in the main event, an eight-man knockout tournament.

The night will also see two challenge matches, including one between Northern Ireland Darts legends Geoff Wylie and John Magowan to warm up the crowd.

And van Gerwen, the leader of the Premier League, can’t wait to get back to Belfast.

“I’m really looking forward to going back for this event with a chance to meet the fans,” said ‘Mighty Mike’.

“I made me Premier League debut in Belfast and the crowd were really great to me so it will be great to be back.

“It will be a night of great darts, which we will all want to win but we will have a lot of fun too.

“Fans should snap up the remaining tickets as they won’t be disappointed.”

A range of ticket options are available and can be purchased directly from The Devenish (02890 301154) or via the event’s promoters MODUS Sports Management online at www.dartshop.tv or by calling the box office 08450 180 180.

A limited number of tickets will be made available on the door on the night of the event.

Darts will be back at the Devenish just a fortnight later when professional player Chris Mason takes to the stage for a charity night in support of Cedar Foundation on Saturday 20 April.

Michael van Gerwen charged to the top of the McCoy’s Premier League with a fantastic victory in Cardiff, where James Wade and Raymond van Barneveld shared a draw on Thursday evening.

van Gerwen produced a sensational display to take a 7-1 triumph against Gary Anderson, with the Dutch ace hitting consecutive checkouts of 121, 120 and 164 along the way.

The 23-year-old’s fourth win of the season, in which he averaged over 107, sent him to the summit of the table and clear of any relegation danger with ‘Judgement Night’ looming in two weeks.

“I played really well and I’m very happy with this,” van Gerwen told www.pdc.tv

“My finishing at the beginning of the game was very good with those three ton-plus finishes but I was playing so well that I didn’t give Gary any chances.

“I’m very confident at the moment and I feel like I could play every day! I can’t be relegated any more and I want to keep my place at the top of the table.”
Wade produced fine finishes of 118 and 124 to share a draw with van Barneveld, who hit five 180s and is now second in the table.
‘The Machine’ remains inside the top four.
There was disappointment for Robert Thornton and Simon Whitlock, however, as they were edged out by Adrian Lewis and Andy Hamilton respectively.
Phil Taylor defeated Wes Newton in the evening’s other match.

Thornton and van Gerwen Shine in Wigan

0

Michael van Gerwen and Robert Thornton both won UK Open qualifiers on a wonderful weekend for the Premier League pair in Wigan.

van Gerwen added Saturday’s title to the two he had previously won last month, before Thornton stopped his rampant run on Sunday and took the honours himself.

‘Mighty Mike’ saw off Michael Smith in Saturday’s final to clinch the £6,000 first prize after he had narrowly missed double twelve to nail a nine-dart-finish in an earlier round.

“It’s always nice to win a tournament like this and I’m delighted,” van Gerwen told PDC.tv

“I know I’m playing well and I’ve shown everyone again today.

“I was strong from the beginning but I played a lot of good players, like Simon Whitlock, Gary Anderson and Peter Wright. I’m full of confidence and I’m taking that into my games at the moment.”

The Dutch sensation looked set to continue is incredible run of success on the Pro Tour, having won UK Open qualifiers 1, 2 & 3 in addition to the final Players Championship event in 2012, before he ran into the brilliant Thornton in Sunday’s semi-finals.

Thornton, the reigning Speedy Services UK Open champion, claimed a 6-3 victory, before triumphing 6-4 against Jamie Caven in the final.

“I’m chuffed to bits to get the win,” said Thornton, who will be appearing alongside van Gerwen in the Portsmouth International Masters in June.

“It’s about time Michael let somebody else win!

“In all seriousness though it’s so tough now.

“The standard is incredible and it’s a proud day when you win one of these.

“It’s harder than winning your Premier League match on a Thursday night and in an odd way, playing in that tournament has prepared me for this!”

Both players will turn their attentions to night seven of the McCoy’s Premier League in Cardiff, where they are in action on Thursday.

There was also a strong showing from Paul Nicholson in both of the weekend’s events, with ‘The Asset’ reaching the quarter-finals on both days.

McCoy’s Premier League Darts: Night Six Round-Up

0

Raymond van Barneveld and Robert Thornton shared a draw in Manchester on Thursday, while Michael van Gerwen and Simon Whitlock enjoyed victories on night six of the McCoy’s Premier League.

‘Barney’ stayed at the top of the table after taking a point from his 6-6 draw with ‘The Thorn’, who bounced back after suffering his first defeat in his debut season a week earlier.

van Barneveld looked set to take victory in a game that included five consecutive breaks of throw but, with the Dutchman leading 6-4, Thornton hit fine finishes of 78 and 100 to share the spoils.

Fantastic finishing was the theme in a thrilling game between Whitlock and James Wade, which went the way of ‘The Wizard’ despite sensational checkouts of 170 and 144 from ‘The Machine’.

Whitlock eventually triumphed 7-4 as both players hit three finishes over 100.

And the Australian ace was delighted to come out on top in such a great game.

“It was a brilliant match and an important win,” said the world number five.

“I knew that I’d have to play great darts to beat James and it proved to be the case.

“He produced some class finishes and I had to deal with that and take some decent shots out myself.

“I felt I had to get at least a point tonight so it’s a huge win and I’ll have to play my best game again next week to beat Andy Hamilton, but that’s the Premier League for you!”

van Gerwen produced another brilliant performance to see off Wes Newton with an average of over 100 as he put last weeks defeat to Adrian Lewis behind him.

Lewis and Gary Anderson reached stalemate, while Phil Taylor was beaten by Andy Hamilton in the evening’s other match.

PDC Announce Pro-Tour Prize Fund Boost

FOLLOWING the announcement of the Professional Darts Corporation’s new contract with Sky Sports, the PDC have now confirmed the latest prize fund increase as Players Championship events move to £50,000 per tournament.
The success of the 2013 Ladbrokes World Darts Championship led to the PDC confirming in January that a review of all prize money would be undertaken, and that the first prize for the 2014 World Championship would increase to £250,000.
Prize money for the McCoy’s Premier League Darts has increased to £520,000 this year, with prize funds for other major televised events currently under review.

“Earlier this year we committed to undertaking a review of prize money across all of our tournaments, and we’re delighted to be able to continue pushing prize money past £6 million annually,” said PDC Chairman Barry Hearn.
“The news of our new, five-year Sky Sports contract is a great boost to the PDC and is also a recognition of the excellence shown by our players and the brilliant entertainment they are providing huge audiences around the world.
“These players are now receiving greater rewards than ever in our sport and our increase in Players Championship prize money will be followed with further announcements as we continue with our aim to develop the professional circuit.
“This increase also shows our commitment to providing increased prize money across the board in PDC events, not just at the top level in major televised championships, and will undoubtedly lead to greater competition than we’ve ever seen before on the ProTour!”
Further to the PDC’s announcement that Sky Sports have extended their contract to broadcast six major tournaments through to 2018, the PDC wish to clarify that the 2013 Speedy Services UK Open will also be broadcast on Sky Sports HD.
The PDC continue to hold discussions with other broadcasters in relation to our other major tournaments for broadcasts both in 2013 and beyond, with further announcements to follow in due course.

McCoy’s Premier Leage Darts: Night Five Round-Up

0

James Wade, Simon Whitlock and Raymond van Barneveld all claimed excellent victories on night five of the McCoy’s Premier League.

Wade produced a brilliant performance to see off Thornton with a 7-1 triumph, averaging over 105 and taking out two 121 finishes along the way.

“I felt really good up there and it showed in my performance,” said ‘The Machine’, who upped his points tally to seven.

“I keep saying it but the practise is really making all the difference and I feel that there’s more to come.

“In fact I know there is. I’m working harder than ever on my game and I’m delighted with the start I’ve made.”

Whitlock had to fight back from 4-1 down to take a 7-5 triumph against Wes Newton and was delighted to claim his second win of the season.

He said: “That could be a very important win.

“I have been playing well for the last few weeks but not getting the results so I’m thrilled to win tonight.

“Every game is so competitive that you’ve got to be happy with every good result.”

van Barneveld went top of the table with his 7-5 success against Andy Hamilton, as six 180s and an average of over 100 gave the Dutchman his fourth win of the season.

“Every opponent is tough in the league so I’m really delighted to have got four wins already,” said ‘Barney’ who faces Thornton next Thursday.

“I’m a confident person now and maybe that’s what got me through in the last leg. I was relaxed and I believed in myself.

“That’s so important in this game and I will have to do it all over again next week against Robert, who has been amazing in his first season.”

Michael van Gerwen suffered defeat at the hands of a rejuvenated Adrian Lewis, while Gary Anderson beat Phil Taylor in the evening’s other matches.

PDC Announce Sky Sports Deal Extension

0

SKY SPORTS will take its partnership with the Professional Darts Corporation into a 25th year thanks to a new five-year broadcast deal.
The agreement offers Sky Sports viewers over 50 days of live and exclusive darts throughout the year including the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship each Christmas until 2018.
As part of the deal, Sky Sports viewers will also enjoy live coverage of the McCoy’s Premier League, PartyPoker.com World Grand Prix, William Hill Grand Slam of Darts, Betfair World Cup of Darts and the Betfair World Matchplay, which celebrates its 20th staging this summer.
The partnership between Sky Sports and the PDC extends back to the organisation’s formation two decades ago, beginning with the 1994 World Championship.
Barney Francis, managing director of Sky Sports, said: “Sky Sports has worked with the PDC since the early 1990s, helping to build the sport from working men’s clubs to some of the biggest arenas in the UK and Ireland.”
He added: “This is a real success story and an excellent long term partnership.  Our live coverage and promotion of darts is unique and Sky Sports viewers can enjoy the fantastic atmosphere that these events generate for a further five years.”
Since the PDC’s formation, live televised darts has grown from just a few hundred fans at venues such as the Circus Tavern and Salford’s Willows Variety Centre, to over 10,000 fans at the O2 Arena for the Premier League.
The World Championship offers £1 million in prize money – over 15 times the prize fund for the PDC’s first World Championship back in 1994 – while over £5 million prize money is now paid out annually on the PDC circuit.
